The Machine Intuition and Mathematical Inference Laboratory works on a range of topics centered on machine intuition and mathematical inference.
*We also collaborate with the Kawamoto Lab on some research supervision and activities.

As of 2026, our main focus is machine learning for arithmetic and algebraic computation, and model explainability based on game theory. We also work on projects in computer vision, weather forecasting, and related areas. See Research for details.

Features

Research. Our work is based on deep learning and computer vision, with distinctive directions involving algebra, game theory, weather, and related fields. We actively submit to top international AI conferences such as NeurIPS and CVPR, and our papers are accepted every year. Our computing environment is relatively strong: each student has access to a workstation with a GPU, and the laboratory has a dedicated compute server with more than 20 GPUs. We also pursue international collaborations, especially with partners in France, Germany, and Denmark, including internships and study-abroad opportunities. We also conduct joint research with major Japanese companies.

Life in the lab. Together with the Kawamoto Lab, we have more than 20 members. There is usually someone in the lab, and the atmosphere is lively. We also hold regular social events, lab retreats, and visits from alumni. Our graduates work in a wide range of fields, and current students often connect with alumni through Slack and alumni events when preparing for their careers.

Undergraduate Students

We accept undergraduate students from the Faculty of Informatics and Data Science at Chiba University. Together with the Kawamoto Lab, we accept eight students each year; after assignment, four students work on Kera’s research topics. Under the faculty’s assignment system, selection is basically based on academic performance.

Graduate Applicants

Graduate students are accepted through the Graduate School of Informatics and Data Science at Chiba University.

• Master’s program: Most openings are usually filled by the four undergraduate students continuing from our lab. A small number of additional students may be accepted, so please contact me if you are interested.
• Doctoral program: Doctoral applicants are welcome. In principle, applicants are expected to have at least one published paper. Applicants judged to be especially strong may be accepted with paid support. The amount is based on the JSPS DC fellowship level of 200,000 JPY/month and may vary depending on research achievements and other scholarships.

For external applicants: I do not read mass-mailed applications. Please write specifically which research topic you are interested in.

For MEXT University Recommendation applicants: If you wish to apply through the MEXT University Recommendation route, you must belong to a university that has an agreement with Chiba University, starting from the 2027 intake. Please check whether your institution is included in Chiba University’s list of partner institutions.

Other Positions

• Researcher: Paid researcher positions may be available. The amount is based on the JSPS PD fellowship level of 360,000 JPY/month and may vary depending on research achievements and other scholarships. We are currently recruiting for the weather project. In principle, applicants are expected to have at least three published papers.
• Research intern: We occasionally accept paid research interns for about three months. The work is usually centered on library development or small-scale research projects. Availability depends on the situation, so please contact me if you are interested.
